The Perinton Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that operates the Fairport Museum at 18 Perrin Street in the Village of Fairport and maintains its collections. The Society began as a research organization in 1935 and moved into the present building in 1979.

The mission of the Society is to promote interest in preserving and sharing local history. Our collections and resources on farming, canal development, structures, genealogy and industry, focus primarily on objects and artifacts manufactured in Perinton in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The following activities are offered throughout the year:

  • Monthly lectures/presentations featuring local and regional speakers
  • A program for 4th graders hosted by our Curator and Town Historian
  • Historic tours
  • Historigram, an informative newsletter on local history, events and special exhibits
  • A picnic for the membership
  • A Gift Shop

The building housing the Museum is the former library, built in 1937 and designated a landmark
in 2008. A mural by local artist Carl Peters, highlights the interior.

SENIOR OPTIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE

Aging Well in Perinton

The Fairport/Perinton community is especially supportive of people who seek to age well. Elders living independently in our community are supported by Senior Options for Independence (SOFI), a professionally staffed program supported by volunteers and sponsored by Fairport Baptist Homes in partnership with the Fairport-Perinton Senior Living Council.

Founded in 1997, SOFI provides care management and transportation services for residents aged 60 and older who desire to remain independent in their own homes. SOFI responds to requests from persons seeking assistance with managing the challenges they and/or their loved ones face as they age. SOFI acts in an advisory and referral capacity, guiding older people or their caregivers through the maze of aging services available in the community, including insurances, benefits, and home supports.

There is no charge for SOFI care management services which can be accessed by calling 377-7830.

In addition, SOFI provides transportation for seniors to complete their essential errands and to get to medical appointments. Transportation services can be arranged by calling 377-8117.

Volunteers are essential to the SOFI program and time commitments are flexible. Call 388-2304 to inquire about volunteer opportunities.
